CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE

A residential compound off Jidka Sodonka Road

Mogadishu, Somalia

Wearing orange jumpsuits mimicking the garb of jihadists held by Americans at Guantanamo Bay, the four American hostages were paraded blindfolded into a bare room and forced to their knees in a straight line.

Bright lights were aimed at their faces, causing them to blink when their blindfolds were removed. A man wearing all black, including a hood that revealed only his eyes, was filming them. Five other Al-Shabaab fighters, covered head to toe in black garments with only their eyes exposed, were positioned behind the hostages. Each jihadist was armed with an AK-47 except for their leader, who stood in the center holding a sheet of paper. A black flag inscribed with white letters in Arabic was hanging on the wall behind them. Only ProTech’s John Duggard was familiar enough with radicals to recognize the so-called “black flag of jihad” with its Shahada inscription: “There is no god but God, Muhammad is the Messenger of God.”

When the cameraman signaled he was ready, the Al-Shabaab leader began to read his script.

“We thank Almighty God, who said in His Holy Book: ‘Ye who believe, take not the Jews and the Christians for your friends and protectors. They are but friends and protectors to each other. And he amongst you who turns to them is of them. Verily God guideth not the unjust.’ May God’s peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his companions, and those who followed his course.”

Glancing up from his text at the camera, he said, “I address this message to the entire Muslim nation to tell them the crusader war has been launched against its people who have faith in God. We now live under this crusader bombardment. The Islamic nation should know we defend a just cause. The Islamic nation has been groaning in pain for decades under the yoke of the joint Jewish-crusader aggression. Palestine is living under the yoke of the Jewish occupation and its people groan from this repression and persecution while no one lifts a finger. The feet of those who came to occupy these lands, usurp these holy places, and plunder these resources are defiling the Arabian Peninsula. And now infidel crusaders are expanding.”

Speaking to the hostages in front of him, he said, “State your name. You first, Ambassador.”

Todd Thomas didn’t respond.

The cameraman stopped filming while the jihadist leader bent down and whispered into the ambassador’s ear.

“What’s wrong, Senator? Cat got your tongue?”

“Are you an American?” Thomas asked as soon as he heard that idiom.

“I was born in the United States, but I am no longer an American.”

“You should be on our side, not the terrorists’.”

“America is the world’s biggest terrorist. Is it logical for the United States and its allies to carry out repression, persecution, plundering, and bloodletting over these many years against Islam without their actions being called terrorism, while when the victim tries to seek justice, he is described as the terrorist?”

“I’m not going to debate you,” Thomas replied in an indignant voice.
